The most famous Casimir effect is the attraction between two uncharged conducting plates at zero temperatures, an effect that cannot be explained by classical electromagnetic theory. This and related Casimir effects are usually explained in terms of vacuum field fluctuations, and this interpretation and alternative ones will be reviewed. The connection between Casimir and van der Waals forces will be made and the extension for the theory to dispersive magnetodielectric media will be we described.
