The Physics Electronics Support Group (E-shop) provides design, construction and maintenance of electronic equipment to the Physics instructional and research groups. Our capabilities include analog and digital circuit development, computer aided design, drafting and documentation, circuit construction, debugging and modification, printed circuit board layout and fabrication, custom front panel layout, custom sheet metal fabrication and wire-wrap assemblies. We also repair and calibrate the lower and upper division instructional equipment as well as electronic and electromechanical equipment for the research groups and the department, including leak detectors. The E-shop maintains a storeroom of electronic parts for purchase by Physics groups and other UCB departments. It is the only comprehensive electronics storeroom on campus.
The Electronics Group plays a significant educational role. Many experimentalist graduate students would not be able to complete their graduate thesis without equipment supplied by the Electronics Group. Physics students bring their questions about electronics for expert answers and advice on a daily basis. The Sr. Engineer has developed and teaches a course (72 hours of class and lab instruction) in the practical application of electronics. This course is offered each summer to Physics graduate students and has been well received.
