Title: Climate Change: New Scientific Challenges    (Colloquia)
Start Date: 11/10/2008
Time: 4:30 pm
Location: 1 LeConte
Speaker: Inez Fung
Affiliation: Prof. of Atmospheric Science, U.C. Berkeley
Details:

The 4th Assessment Report of the International Panel on Climate Change concludes that recent changes in the climate system are mostly likely due to human activities.  This talk reviews the findings of the IPCC report, climate feedback processes not included in the last generation of climate models, and summarizes new challenges to our understanding of climate change since the IPCC report.  Much research is needed to improve our predictions of the timing and magnitude of climate change for the next decades.  The Lorenz 1963 model of chaos will be used to explore whether we can predict abrupt climate change.
