Department Overview

Physics is the largest department in the L&S Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. It is ranked as one of the top physics departments in the world, with excellence in research, teaching, and service to the community all highly valued. The department has 80 ladder and active emeriti faculty, 60 career and casual staff, and 300 lecturers, teaching assistants, readers, research personnel, postdocs, fellowship recipients, and visiting scholars.

This position manages the Physics Machine Shop, a formally approved recharge unit which generates $500K in recharge income and which supports research and instruction through consultation, design,and construction of advanced prototype scientific apparatus. It oversees and manages activities related to the skilled crafts and trades, specifically machinist activities such as fabrication and design of cryogenic, ultra high vacuums as well as vacuum and high pressure equipment. It also manages the Physics Student Shop, a non‐recharge unit which provides basic machining training to students.

Reporting to the Director of Administration, the position plans, organizes and directs the operations of the Machine Shop. It manages the Shop activities with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and employees. It participates in development and monitoring of operational and budget processes, staff FTE, finance, human resources, and space planning. Develops and monitors Shop policies and procedures. Ensures operations meet internal and external regulatory requirements, including safety, on continual basis. Establishes, implements, and monitors operational procedures, work quality, and productivity. Ensures technical achievements within time and financial constraints. Establishes and ensures highest customer service standards. Plans maintenance and upgrades to the Shop. Monitors equipment performance, including complex computer‐driven machines. Determines and implements preventative maintenance programs. Plans for minor capital improvements in coordination with Physics Facilities Manager.

Provides engineering services to faculty and researchers. Assists or consults in the design of novel and unusual items. Consults with researchers or other staff concerning equipment design and materials to be used to develop specific scientific apparatus. Keeps informed on new developments in machines, materials, and technology and assures training in new techniques as they are adopted. Determines in which cases use of outside vendor services can be both effective and cost‐saving, and provides such recommendations to researchers. Develops vendor contacts for this purpose.

Fully supervises, hires, trains, supports and develops professional, highly skilled, high‐tech machinists. Manages technical achievements within time and financial constraints. Sets work priorities, plans and schedules projects, assigns work to machinist while matching skills to job requirements. Monitors work flow and reviews job progress to ensure all requirements are met, including materials, tolerances, interfaces, finishes, and other concerns.

This position is responsible for maintaining and developing one’s own technical and managerial skills.

Required Qualifications

•  Strong management knowledge and skills to ensure effective management of a technical shop which operates through recharge;
•  Demonstrated experience with financial and human resources particularly in the context of a shop with highly skilled, represented employees.
•  Organizational skills to manage the Shop and incumbent’s own responsibilities, ability to prioritize work assignments, effective interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills, and long‐and short term planning skills.
•  Demonstrated supervisory skills to include scheduling and assigning work, selection and evaluation of staff. Working knowledge of or ability to learn campus HR policies as applicable to supervisees.
•  Ability to establish, communicate, implement, and continuously monitor quality and customer service standards. Ability to motivate and inspire subordinate staff to provide the highest level of service to departmental and campus constituents. Ability to ensure that subordinate staff provide quick, accurate and appropriate response to both routine issues as well as emergency response to more urgent situations.
•  Project management skills including ability to provide accurate estimates for cost and time. Ability to ensure consistent delivery of projects to meet budget, time, and technical requirements. Ability to direct jobs to outside facilities specializing in technologies like laser welding, 3d printing, and water jet as appropriate to save time and money.
•  Comprehensive knowledge and skills in machine shop crafts including shop practices, machining principles, and use of standard and specialized machine tools, such as lathe, vertical mill, horizontal mill, drill press, grinders and saw, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), and optical measuring devices. Solid knowledge of CAD/solidworks software.
•  Strong technical skills. Expertise in mechanical engineering. Expertise in complex mechanical, optical, and electromechanical systems. Superior technical knowledge required to manage systems and equipment in the areas of electrical power, mechanical apparatus, ultra high (10 ‐10 ATM cc/Sec He) vacuum, magnetic,
computer interfaces, and computer analysis and programming. Ability to suggest, develop, and conceptualize significant contributions to projects in order to increase the characteristics and properties of materials involving corrosion, expansion and contraction, yield strengths, compatibility, and thermal transfer.
•  Ability to work from rough drawings, sketches, and/or oral instructions. Ability to communicate with vendors using technical language.
•  Knowledge of and experience in industry safety practices and procedures. Skills and ability to actively promote and maintain safety standards and to establish effective in‐house practices.

Preferred Qualifications

•  Prior experience managing a machine shop, including responsibility for finances and human resources.
•  Working knowledge of UC HR policies related to represented staff.

Salary & Benefits

This full‐time position is classified at the Engineering Tech Supervisor 2 level. The hiring annual salary range is $57,000 to $94,000, depending on experience. The full annual salary range for the title is $57,000 minimum ‐ $84,600 midpoint ‐ $112,200 maximum.
