A short reception in the mezzanine of Zellerbach Auditorium will immediately follow the commencement ceremony. Strawberries and sparkling cider will be served.

TICKETS

Commencement is a ticketed event and by invitation only. Graduating students have been sent appropriate information. Tickets are not available at the door on the day of the event. There are no exceptions; please plan accordingly.

Each attendee must have a ticket to be admitted to Commencement. (Graduating students and children under the age of five do not need tickets.)

Tickets are available in Student Services, 368 LeConte Hall, Monday-Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM (closed 12-1 PM). Please pick up your tickets by Monday, May 6, 2013.

Candidates who have moved out of the area, or are working full-time, may have their tickets mailed. Please mail a check (number of tickets - 2=____X $5)  $ ___________ - payable to the UC Regents to:

ON COMMENCEMENT DAY (May 21, 2013)

1:15 PM         Zellerbach Auditorium opens.
                      (Tickets will be collected upon entry.)

1:20 PM         Candidates arrive.
                       Get name card from Anne, Claudia or Donna.

1:30 PM         Organization of procession begins.
                       Candidates will queue according to the diagram below

2:00 PM         Ceremony begins promptly at 2 PM!
                       The ceremony lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

3:30 PM         Reception begins.         

5:00 PM         End of event.

 

PRINCIPAL SPEAKER

Our principal speaker will be

Robert B. Laughlin
Professor in the Department of Physics at Stanford University and co-recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physics

                 

DIPLOMAS

Diplomas are available approximately 3 ½ to 4 months after degrees are officially conferred (it takes several months to process). Details on diplomas can be found at: http://registrar.berkeley.edu/Default.aspx?PageID=diplomas.html
At Commencement, graduating students will receive a scroll for their participation in commencement exercises.

 

PHOTOGRAPHS

Each graduating student will have his or her photo taken by Grad Images – Grad Trak Photography as they begin to cross the stage to accept their scroll. There is no obligation to order graduation photographs. Details can be found at: http://www.gradimages.com/.

 

CAP & GOWN

Cap and gown will be available starting on April 1, 2013 and throughout May at the Cal Student Store. It is recommended that graduates obtain their cap and gown as early as possible. Lines are very long in May (sometimes a wait of more than an hour). The package includes cap, gown and tassel. Packages also include a hood for Masters and PhDs only. Cost is approximately as follows:

Bachelor      $55
Master        $111
PhD            $139 (includes rental tam) or $132 (with hard cap)

HONORS CORDS

Undergraduate students completing an honors thesis in the Physics program are entitled to wear an honors cord at Commencement. The honors cords are available for purchase by eligible students only at the Graduation Department of the Cal Student Store. Eligible students must be prepared to show student ID when purchasing an honors cord.

 

GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Physics Department will provide a limited number of generic announcements with the purchase of tickets. However, the Cal Student store sells formal/customized printed announcements. For more information please contact the Cal Student Store at 2480 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA 94704. Please keep in mind you will need to order formal customized announcements well in advance.

 

PARKING
Parking information is available at: http://pt.berkeley.edu/

The City of Berkeley Sather Gate Garage, located west of Telegraph Avenue between Channing Way and Durant Avenue is also available to the public.

Disabled parking:
All designated disabled spaces and non-reserved spaces will be available at the public parking rate to disabled with certified handicapped placards or license plates on a first-come, first-served basis.
