Details: I will describe recent experiments with superconducting circuits, in which the strong coherent coupling of a single photon to a quantum two-level system has been realized for the first time. Such a feat was previously only realizable in atomic cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments. I will also show how strong coupling is used to entangle many photons with a single two-level system to perform a quantum non-demolition measurement. This new regime of matter-light interaction in a solid allows us both to perform state of the art quantum optics experiments and to realize new elements for a superconducting quantum information processor.
