A central theme of nanoscience is the emergence and control of physical properties through the manipulation of material structures at the atomic scale. This talk will focus on two such examples: the oscillatory behavior of the thermal stability, work function, and superconducting transition temperature of metal thin films as a function of thickness; and the electronic and optical properties of semiconductor nanowires of various configurations with modified electron/hole characteristics. The physics and potential applications of these systems will be discussed. |
