It is with mixed emotions that we must announce the upcoming retirement of our own Warner Carlisle, Mechanical Shop Manager. We are truly grateful to him for his leadership and vision as the Mechanical Shop has grown and innovated over the years. His official retirement date will be July 1st.
Warner has worked in labs all over the campus in his 27 years in Berkeley, but the physics lab was always his goal. He began at the College of Engineering Richmond Field Station in 1992, eventually making his way to the Physics Department to lead the R&D shop and its team of specialized machinists for the past nine years. Under his leadership, the Shop has made progress in modernizing its fabrication operations, has purchased cutting edge new equipment, developed advanced prototypes to advance faculty research, and has adapted to 3-D technologies.
"I fell in love with the physics world,” Warner said in an article written about his work in the Shops in 2018. “We know we’re carrying a lot of history on our backs here,” he went on to say. “I’d like to think we do right by them.”
Discussions continue on ways to further enrich the functionality of the Machine Shop. In the meantime, we'll be tapping Warner's vast memory banks for ideas and suggestions and expect to see him around after retirement. We wish him the best.
