We are entering a new “golden age” of research on black holes. This golden age is being triggered by numerical-relativity simulations that catalyze analytical-relativity insights. An example is a discovery that, when black holes collide and merge, the merged hole has six vortexes of twisting space attached to it, and their vortex dynamics generates gravitational waves. The golden age will culminate in observational tests of new insights, such as these, by LIGO and other gravitational wave observatories.
