Is there a deeper cause for the dissipative nature of our world? I will report on the convergence that took place recently involving string theory, condensed matter and high energy physics. This revolves around quantum-critical states of matter that produce entropy in a remarkable simple and universal way, following from  the habits of quantum black holes according to the string theoretical AdS/CFT correspondence.
