Over the past 15 years, there has been growing excitement about storing, processing, and transmitting information using physical systems that exhibit quantum mechanical phenomena. Using superconducting electronics, it is possible to realize coherent nonlinear oscillators with vanishing internal dissipation—the basic building block of “artificial” atoms which can be used as quantum bits and quantum noise limited amplifiers for measurement. An introduction to the field along with recent results on single shot quantum measurement and novel architectures, including weak link based Josephson junction and hybrid solid state circuits, will be presented.
