The sharp temperature jump from the Sun’s surface ($6000 ~K$) to the million degree corona occurs within a narrow transition region – the site of micro-flares, explosive events and supersonic plasma jets, whose origin and physical nature have not been understood. I’ll discuss a novel view of the energy build up in the solar atmosphere associated with cascade of shock waves, their interaction and cumulative effects resulted from hydromagnetic activity among network magnetic elements in the photosphere. I’ll present results of the coordinated observations with the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE), that allowed us to compare data taken simultaneously at different heights of the solar atmosphere and study history of events during their evolution. The observations strongly support the theory and provide insight into the origin of the solar transition region. The findings account for the general mechanisms of energy production, transfer and release throughout the Sun’s and stellar atmospheres.(click here for webcast) |
