The unique properties of optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators include a small size and high quality factors (Q). At JPL we have recently demonstrated WGM resonators made with crystalline materials and obtained record high quality factors. Based on this, we have studied the use of optical WGM resonators as "artificial atoms" with linear and nonlinear properties similar to natural atoms. The advantage of these artificial atoms is the elimination of some of the restrictions associated with natural atoms, such as specific wavelengths for excitation of energy levels, and the inability to readily tune or alter the energy level structures. Thus many new investigations and applications in fundamental physics, quantum optics, and photonics might be realized with these devices.(click here for webcast) |
