Cells are constantly internalizing and transporting various forms of molecular cargo.  Using single-particle fluorescence microscopy it is now possible to simultaneously track fluorescently labeled proteins and cargo within live cells.  This method has revealed the existence of a novel mechanism for cellular internalization and transport.  This mechanism is initiated by the electrostatic interaction of cargo with cell surface proteins and may be used by a range of cargo that lack specific cellular receptors.
