Meet Our Scientists

Science is addressing the questions that man has been asking for millennia: Where do we come from? Why do we exist? Where are we going? Once we understand the Higgs boson well, we will get back to less than a billionth of a second away from the Big Bang, and the answers to these questions, involving dark matter and neutrinos, may become clear.

Prospective Students

For many, becoming a student at UC Berkeley is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Known as the greatest public university in the world, Berkeley is home to amazing students and world-class faculty whose work is making a difference in our understanding of the Universe and in the way we live. We hope you will explore all that the University and Department have to offer, and maybe we’ll see you in the department someday soon!

Current Students

Students in the Physics Department, with wonderfully diverse interests and backgrounds, are passionate about their major and they participate fully in the exciting life of the department. This is what makes Physics at Berkeley a place where meaningful friendships and exciting scientific collaborations flourish. Many undergraduates are able to find jobs in research groups; graduate students understand the importance of mentoring undergraduates; and faculty and staff create an atmosphere where problem-solving and curiosity are valued. Quite simply, students are at the heart of everything that happens in Physics.

Faculty & Staff

On education, Albert Einstein said in 1936: “The aim must be the training of independently acting and thinking individuals who, however, see in service to the community their highest life problem.”

Faculty and staff in the Physics Department at Berkeley agree to such a collective purpose: to serve their community by educating the best and brightest students and by producing cutting-edge physics research that serves humanity. Faculty in all physics sub-fields work to bring graduate and undergraduate students along with them in their research, and they participate in all aspects of the life of the department. Physics staff contribute through the advising of students; the managing of instructional labs and teaching; building and maintaining equipment in the machine and electronic shops; raising and managing the funds that are crucial to this top-notch program; building and maintaining classrooms and laboratories throughout our buildings.

Alumni & Friends

Physics Alumni and Friends are amazingly talented and interesting people who have taken the gifts and tools from this department to become great researchers, CEOs, teachers, doctors, lawyers, humanitarians, philanthropists, even Nobel Prize winners and invaluable supporters of their home department. Without the support and interest from our alumni and friends, Physics would not be able to maintain its #1 ranking as the top-rated department in the country. With the help of our alumni and friends, we continue to attract and retain the best professors as well as the very best students.
