The Paul L. Richards Physics Innovation Laboratory

Students working in the Physics Innovation Lab

The Berkeley Paul L. Richards Physics Innovation Lab (PIL) employs a student-led staffing model designed to foster an inclusive environment that encourages peer-to-peer mentorship and leadership. Unlike larger maker spaces, which often present significant barriers to entry through stringent training requirements, cost to enter, or restrictions tied to specific coursework, PIL is intentionally structured to lower these barriers. It provides a welcoming, approachable environment that invites students of diverse backgrounds, particularly those who might otherwise hesitate to engage with makerspaces. “It's somewhere that students can go and work safely and not have to have lengthy training,” says Student Machine Shop Manager, Jesse Lopez.

Honoring a Legacy

Named in honor of Emeritus Professor Paul Richards, a pioneer in infrared and millimeter wave physics, the PIL reflects his dedication to hands-on experimentation and prototyping in the lab. Read more about the development of the Physics Innovation Lab here.

Hands-On Learning and Cutting-Edge Tools

The new facility offers students up-to-date tools for automated processing and computer-aided design, 3D printers and laser cutters, and soldering and circuitry stations. Additional lab equipment includes basic hand tools, voltmeters, oscilloscopes and other diagnostic equipment for electronics, and an optics table with lasers. New equipment will be added based on student feedback.

Who can use the Lab?

The PIL is currently open to Physics and Astronomy undergrad students. There are no class prerequisites for students to use the space, however, there is some basic safety training. (Here are some details on the training and where to sign up for it). If additional information is needed, contact ULAB at physics@ulab.berkeley.edu, and/or visit the ULAB website: https://ulab.studentorg.berkeley.edu/labs/physics.

Who manages the Lab?

The PIL is managed by the Undergraduate Laboratory at Berkeley (ULAB), Physics and Astronomy student organization. Undergraduate mentors in the ULAB program are often involved as superusers in addition to their ULAB projects.

Where is the Physics Innovation Lab?

The PIL is located in room 102B on the First Floor of Physics South, nextdoor to the Student Machine Shop.

Testimonials from current superusers

“Students have found the room eye-catching and have been curious about what their capabilities can extend to in our new makerspace.”

“Students who might not have considered using the makerspace have also used the space to study or collaborate, which has brought it more attention.”

From student machine shop manager Jesse Lopez:
“From an operational standpoint, it ensures continuous productivity for both this facility and its adjacent counterpart, the Physics Student Machine Shop, while maintaining minimal costs and staffing commitments. From a student perspective, this collaboration not only enables students to engage in makerspace activities led by ULAB but also introduces them to a safety culture. Additionally, this appointment fosters constructive and productive relationships.”

Supported by the Physics Innovators Initiative

The PIL is made possible in part by Berkeley’s Physics Innovators Initiative (Pi2), which aims to provide students with practical experience using the types of equipment and projects they may encounter in advanced studies or careers in science and engineering.
