Berkeley Physics is delighted to announce that 4 new faculty members will join the Department in 2020 and 2021. From left to right they are:
Eric Yue Ma
Eric Y. Ma received his B.S. in Physics from Peking University, and his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University. He stayed at Stanford as a joint post-doctoral researcher in Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering. He has also held positions at Apple. Dr. Ma will join Berkeley full time in July 2021.
Geoff Penington
Geoff Penington's research focusses on using ideas from the theory behind quantum computers (and, more generally, quantum information) in order to make progress in our understanding of the quantum mechanics of gravity. In particular, he has recently been working on understanding how the information that falls into a black hole ends up being encoded in the Hawking radiation left behind after the black hole evaporates.
Liang Dai
Liang Dai received a B.S. in Physics from Peking University in 2011. Later on, he earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the Johns Hopkins University in 2015 working on theoretical cosmology. From 2015 to 2018, he was awarded an NASA Einstein fellowship and was appointed a postdoctoral Member at the Institute for Advanced Study in the School of Natural Sciences. From 2018 to 2020, he was a long-term John Bahcall postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study, before he joined the faculty in the Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley.
Alp Sipahigil
Alp Sipahigil received his Ph.D. in Physics at Harvard University with Mikhail Lukin in 2017. He began his postdoctoral work at Caltech as an IQIM scholar in Oskar Painter’s group. He will join Berkeley as an Assistant Professor in January 2021 with joint appointments in Berkeley EECS and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, with a supporting appointment in Physics.
