Mechanics 101

Dr. B saved my bachelor's degree. I had gotten an F in my first physics course as a junior transfer at Cal. I had to change everything about my life and studies to make the shift to Cal's demands. I retook the course and had the gift and inspiration of landing in Dr. B's class.

Instead of a course with over 50 students I was in the company of maybe 15 students and Dr. B. The company was close as the room barely fit our number. He was thorough but he was also, while very formal and dignified, slyly humorous. At certain junctions in his exposition, he could drop an entendre or a tart and subtle pun. This might happen only once or twice in a class session, so he was no comic. Yet he was humane as he slowed his cadence a bit for the punch line to land and then moved on. He dignified us as students and as people.

To me he was a rare gift in LeConte Hall, and a rare treat.

I came away from his class with a resurrected spirit and hope that while Cal was not easy, it was not heartless.

Thank you, Dr. B!
