Support What Matters

Berkeley Physics is home to world-renowned scientists and researchers and is regarded as one of the top Physics departments in the world. Our talented faculty and students are engaged in research, innovation, and instruction at the forefront of many fields including astrophysics, biophysics, particle physics, theoretical physics, experimental physics, quantum physics, and condensed matter physics. Your support will allow us to support the research efforts of our faculty, ensure that our students are the best and brightest, and maintain our competitive position alongside other world-class departments.

Featured Giving Areas

Friends of the Department of Physics (FOP)

Your gift to this fund provides unrestricted support to the department, allowing us to relieve the areas of greatest need for our students and researchers. Help us continue our tradition of excellence and enhance the collegial life of the department for all of its members.

Graduate Student Support Fund

The Physics Graduate Student Support Fund administers vital, unrestricted relief to our graduate students at the discretion of the department chair. Your gift to this fund will be used to enhance graduate education and research efforts in the department, such as student travel, research equipment, fellowships, and stipends. Our graduate program is recognized as one of the best in the country, and support of our students allows us to maintain that tradition of excellence.

Leinweber Institute for Theoretical Physics

The Berkeley Center for Theoretical Physics is at the forefront of particle theory, string theory, and cosmology research. Internationally renowned faculty in all subgroups of theoretical physics collaborate at the center to uncover truths about everything from dark matter to neutrinos to the multiverse. Key to progress and discovery within the BCTP is its people — our faculty, postdocs, and graduate students all play tremendously important roles in collaborations, both nationally and internationally. Your support will help us continue to drive discovery in the fascinating field of theoretical physics.

Quantum Information Science Fund

Quantum information science is an emerging and interdisciplinary field at the nexus of physics, chemistry, engineering, and computer science. This fund will support activities such as workshops, student programs, curriculum development, and operational costs in this field at UC Berkeley.

Research Centers

Scientists working on equipment

Berkeley Physics is home to 4 research centers which are taking a modern approach to answering some of the most pressing questions in science. The Center for Quantum Coherent Science (CQCS), the Berkeley Center For Theoretical Physics (BCTP), the Berkeley Experimental Particle Physics Center (BEPP) and the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics (BCCP). Your support will help teams of leading physicists, promising new researchers, and the world's brightest graduate and undergraduate students pursue lines of investigation with fresh perspectives.

Scholarships and Fellowships

Student explaining to another student

Scholarships and fellowships provide support for new generations of students, and help keep pace with rising tuition costs. They are a key competitive tool in attracting the best and brightest students to Physics at Berkeley. Scholarships and fellowships may be endowed or supported on an annual basis. A full year’s fellowship costs approximately $35,000 for a California resident and close to $45,000 for a non-resident. Recently created fellowships include the Stuart J. Freedman Fellowship, the Charles H. Townes Fellowship, the Benjamin Lee and Julius Wess Fellowship, and the Leo Falicov Fellowship, as well as the Graduate Student Support Fund and the Undergraduate Student Support Fund.
