The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) announced today the election of 120 new members and 30 international members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Among those honored are two UC Berkeley Physics faculty members: Michael Crommie, Professor of Physics, and Steven Kahn, Dean of Mathematical & Physical Sciences and Professor of Physics and of Astronomy.

Their election to the NAS is one of the highest honors a scientist can receive and reflects their significant contributions to advancing scientific knowledge.

This year’s elections bring the total number of active NAS members to 2,662 and international members to 556. International members are nonvoting and are citizens of countries outside the United States.
